16th International Workshop on
HIV Observational Workshops (IWHOD)
The International Workshop on HIV Observational Databases (IWHOD) took place in March 2012 in
Athens and was attended by 190 delegates. A total of 67 cohorts or
collaborations were represented at this closed meeting which is
organised by EuroCoord.
Mortality rates in certain groups
of HIV positive people on treatment are similar to those in the
general population
A study by COHERE in EuroCoord has shown that mortality patterns
in treated HIV positive people with a high CD4 count who are not
injecting drug users are similar to those in the general
population.
EuroCoord methodology
subgroup
Accurate and appropriate statistical analyses of the data
collected from participating cohorts and clinics are fundamental to
the success of the ongoing research agenda in EuroCoord.
No evidence of clinical benefit
for patients starting treatment with a healthy immune
system
A paper published by the CASCADE Collaboration in EuroCoord has
found no evidence of clinical benefit for patients starting HIV
treatment at higher CD4 cell counts of between 500-799
cells/mm3.
EuroCoord supports World AIDS
Day
Thursday 1 December marks the 23rd annual World AIDS Day which
is an opportunity to show support for people living with HIV, to
remember those who have died, and to unite in the fight against
HIV.
Study shows substantial increases
in the number of people requiring treatment
A study by the CASCADE Collaboration in EuroCoord has estimated
that there will be a substantial increase in the number of HIV
positive people who will require treatment within the first 5 years
after becoming infected, following changes in treatment
guidelines.
The importance of timely
initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) to prevent
major AIDS-defining cancers
Looking specifically at Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) and non-Hodgkin
lymphoma (NHL), the authors used data on 689 cases and 4,588
controls and found that an initially low and decreasing CD4 cell
count during the year prior to diagnosis was predictive of both
malignancies. The association between a weak and weakening immune
system and cancer risk was significant even when the analysis was
restricted to the period after 2000, when cART was widely
available.
EuroCoord briefing
document
The aims and structure of EuroCoord are outlined in a briefing
document which is now available.
Study highlights challenges of
maintaining long-term viral suppression in
children
An MRC-funded study supported by EuroCoord published in the
Lancet, has shown that 12% of children with HIV develop triple
class virological failure by 5 years after starting antiretroviral
therapy (ART), and 20% by 8 years.
Tr@inforPedHIV 2011 –
Registration now open!
The next Tr@inforPedHIV course will be taking place in Rome
24-26 October 2011.
First publication from
EuroCoord-CHAIN project
Data from EuroCoord were used in an analysis which investigated
the effect of Transmitted Drug Resistance (TDR) on outcome in the
first year of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
